Bjork

Another visual from the ''Volta'' era

Anyone who knows me knows I have a pretty overwhelming fan crush on the wonderful, groundbreaking and beautiful Bjork. I could and have (more times than I'd like admit) talk for hours about how incredible and important her music is but right now I'm going to focus on her services to make up.  For each album Bjork takes on a new musical persona and matches this with a different visual identity which reflects the tone and mood of the album; whether thats bindis and hair buns or a face full of face paint, this woman knows the make up can be used in a joyful, creative way. It's been a struggle but I've picked 4 of my favourite Bjork make up looks.

Ok so this might not be the best look for a for a night on the town but I love how bold and   uncompromising it is, yes it's a little bit gross but the strangeness of it paired with that just-plain-good black eye make up makes it a worthy image. No one suits black eye make up quite like Bjork.

Oh this look brings me so much joy, its so graphic and boisterous and the colour palette is spot on.

This look on the cover of ''Post'' is a very ''pretty'' look for Bjork and it's just gorgeous. I always love a clash of red and pink  and the way she's taken the blush so high gives it a twist that stops is looking too ''Addicted to Love''

So this look is not technically ''make up'' but its on and around her face so I'm gonna run with it. This is a perfect example of Bjork expressing the tone of her album with her visuals (including fashion and make up)  Vulnicura which expresses the emotional turmoil of her relationship breakdown ( side note ; do not listen to this when you're in the hormonal post natal bubble; the line How will I sing us out of this sorrow, Build a safe bridge for the child out of this danger'' will make you sob.) is paired with the incredible ''masks'' and headpieces she wore for the promotional material and  tour. They show the way people often feel defensive and emotionally shattered after relationships. On her tour she wore them and it seemed like a physical defence for her when facing a huge audience and bearing her heart with raw and emotional material ( she cancelled some dates due to emotional toll of performing this album)

In a world of tastefully bronzed celebrities and tired references to Hollywood glamour my beloved Bjork is a breath of fresh Icelandic air, I could have picked dozens more but I hope you like the ones I went with!
